Bronxville Public Library

My first Author Talk of 2017 was scheduled for the Bronxville Public Library, a beautiful structure on Pondfield Road in the village of Bronxville.  I prepared eagerly, practicing the excerpts I would read aloud, and getting some cookies to add to the refreshments the library offered.  A lovely flyer was generated by Christine, a very kind young librarian, who met with me first to discuss the program. Friends of mine invited friends and relatives, and former colleagues and students assured me they'd attend.  The day before the event I visited my hairdresser - of course Ms. Murphy's creator had to look reasonably well put together - and everything was under control. Everything but the weather.

It was a former student who first alerted me to the possibility of snow. Mind you, the previous day, January 6, was a gorgeous, sunny, winter day. But Kelly, a young lady who'd been in my English class some time ago and was now an educator herself, sent me a message asking if the talk would continue if the weather was bad. I assured her confidently that the talk would go on.

The next morning dawned bright and clear. The snow didn't start to fall until about ten o-clock, but suddenly the prediction of heavy snowfall began to fill the airwaves. I realized I'd have to cancel my talk. So many people to call, starting with the librarian, who expressed surprise. Snow hadn't reached Bronxville yet. But Kelly had been so right! By two pm, the time my talk was to begin, snow was falling steadily and area libraries, including the one in Bronxville, were closed. All that remains of that would be event was a beautiful flyer, which I'll reproduce here:

Christine rescheduled my Author Talk, and the day dawned bright and sunny - and stayed that way! No snow!

Here, on February 18, I'm speaking about Ms. Murphy, and having a wonderful time.
